INTRODUCTION

Benenden hospital is an independent hospital with charitable status and is a member of the Benenden Group. Benenden health offers a range of discretionary healthcare and well-being services to individuals and business healthcare members of all ages. The hospital accepts Benenden health members, private patients and NHS patients to carry out a range of surgical, diagnostic and out-patient related services.

Moreton Hayward has a long standing relationship with Benenden Hospital, built over many years of successful projects together. The largest and current project is a major redevelopment of the hospital involving the construction of the new east and west wings along with an entire remodelling of the existing hospital and the surrounding car parking and external landscaping. The project had many hurdles to overcome including a change in procurement strategy and multiple conditions imposed by planning regulations. Moreton Hayward has been involved from inception and will be involved until completion.

PROJECT

The construction work has been let at a value of approximately £30 million on a traditional basis with the form of contract being used, a JCT with quantities. The project is being carried out over 2 sections, covers 14,000 m2 of floor area and includes a new energy centre and new mechanical and electrical services. The programme for the work is 30 months and the hospital remains fully operational throughout the construction work.

Section 1 of the development is the formation of the new east wing that will create new theatres with the latest technology and up to date equipment, new wards and a twin Endoscopy suite along with the creation of a new fire road to the south of the hospital.

Section 2 of the development is the formation of the new west wing where the new outpatients department will be located along with a procedure suite and Children’s ward. A new build infill is going to be constructed to create a new entrance and reception area, along with refurbishment of the existing Imaging Department. Additional hospital parking and landscaping are also carried out under section2.
